Frequently asked questions
Whether you’re exploring Azupay for your business or paying through one of our partners, here’s everything you need to know about how we make real-time payments faster, safer, and smarter for Australians, and why leading enterprises choose Azupay to power them.
Personal
What is Azupay?
Azupay is a trusted Australian payments provider that lets you pay or get paid instantly, without needing cards or BSB details.
We use PayID and PayTo, powered by the New Payments Platform (NPP), and enhance them with better experiences, real-time confirmation, and extra security. When you see Azupay at your checkout experience, you’re using a simpler, safer way to pay by bank.
How is Azupay different from PayID or PayTo?
PayID and PayTo are the national payment rails, but Azupay makes them work better for businesses and consumers.
We layer on the technology, workflows, and experience design that make real-time payments practical and intuitive; like instant reconciliation, name matching, and smart workflows that reduce failures and fraud.
In short: Azupay turns infrastructure into experience.
Is Azupay safe?
Yes. Azupay is licensed under an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) and complies with national payment regulations.
We use real-time account checks, data encryption, and bank-grade authentication, giving you all the protections of the banking system, with faster outcomes and fewer errors.
What is PayID?
PayID lets you use an easy-to-remember identifier (like an email or phone number), instead of your BSB and account number.
When you pay with Azupay’s PayID based solution, your funds move instantly, securely, and are automatically reconciled for the business receiving it.
What is PayTo?
PayTo replaces outdated direct debit and card-on-file payments. It lets you authorise automatic or recurring payments directly from your bank account, and manage them in your banking app, instantly, transparently, and under your control.
What are Passkeys, and how do they make payments safer?
Passkeys are a new way to confirm your identity when making payments, using your fingerprint, face, or device instead of a password or SMS code. They’re faster, easier, and far more secure because they can’t be phished or reused by someone else.
Azupay is the only known provider in Australia offering Passkeys for PayTo payments, helping people approve payments instantly and safely inside their banking app. Once you’ve set up a passkey for a PayTo agreement with one business, it can be recognised at other Azupay-powered checkouts, making future payments even faster, no re-verification or extra steps required.
That means safer and faster transactions, smoother approvals, and stronger protection against fraud, all while keeping your personal details secure.
Why don’t I always see the Azupay brand at checkout?
You might not always see Azupay, but you’re likely using it.
Azupay powers the real-time payment experiences behind many trusted Australian brands, banks, and platforms. In many cases, our technology is white-labelled, meaning you’ll see the business or bank’s branding, but Azupay is powering the payment securely in the background.
This approach lets enterprises deliver a seamless customer experience while relying on Azupay’s infrastructure, compliance, and support to make real-time payments work reliably at scale.
What happens if something goes wrong during a payment?
Payments made with Azupay are real-time, traceable, and secure. If an issue occurs, such as incorrect account details or an interrupted payment, the transaction can be tracked and resolved through your bank or the business you paid.
Importantly, PayID based payments by Azupay already mitigate many of the weak points that cause errors in traditional transfers. Because PayID is linked to verified account details, there’s no need to manually enter BSB or account numbers, reducing the chance of mistakes, fraud, or lost funds.
Azupay adds another layer of protection with account checks, name matching, and automated reconciliation, ensuring issues are identified and resolved quickly.
How does Azupay keep my information safe?
Your security is our top priority. Azupay is SOC 2 Type II certified, which means independent experts audit our systems each year to make sure your data is protected and our controls are operating effectively.
We use the same security standards trusted by major banks, including end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication, and 24/7 monitoring to detect and prevent threats before they happen.
All of our cloud environments are ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certified, and we follow global frameworks like NIST 2.0 to manage and protect your information.
In short, Azupay keeps your payments, and your personal details safe, private, and protected every time you pay.
Business
What does Azupay do for businesses?
Azupay helps businesses receive, collect, and send payments in real time.
We go beyond PayID and PayTo by providing enterprise-grade APIs, fraud prevention, account verification, and integration tools that make real-time payments scalable, compliant, and easy to manage.
From instant and recurring payments, to verified payouts, Azupay gives enterprises one trusted platform for it all.
How is Azupay different from other PayID or PayTo providers?
Most providers only connect you to the NPP rails, while Azupay helps you run your business on them.
We add:
- Smart workflows and automation for billing, payouts, and reconciliation.
- Account Check Service (ACS) for verified payments.
- Passkey authentication for secure, seamless user approval.
- Enterprise integration support with custom onboarding and white-glove implementation.
How fast are payments with Azupay?
Every payment sent through Azupay settles instantly, 24/7, weekends and public holidays included.
No batch delays. No waiting. Just real-time movement of funds with automatic confirmation.
How secure is Azupay?
We’re an AFSL-licensed provider built on the New Payments Platform (NPP), the same network used by major banks.
Every transaction goes through multi-factor verification, account validation, and real-time monitoring to stop fraud before it happens.
What are passkeys, and why do they matter for PayTo payments?
Passkeys are a new, safer way to authenticate online transactions, replacing passwords, SMS codes, and one-time pins with biometric verification (like Face ID or fingerprint). They’re faster, phishing-proof, and reduce the risk of account takeovers or payment fraud.
Azupay is one of the first providers in Australia to enable businesses to use passkeys for PayTo payments, giving enterprises stronger authentication, fewer failed authorisations, and a smoother customer experience.
For businesses, passkeys also improve conversion. Once a customer sets up a PayTo agreement with a passkey at one Azupay-powered merchant, that same secure credential can be recognised and reused seamlessly at others, meaning faster approvals, less friction, and higher completion rates.
This innovation makes real-time payments not only instant but intelligently connected, securing every transaction while helping enterprises lift performance at checkout.
Can Azupay integrate with our systems?
Yes. Azupay’s APIs and partner integrations make it easy to embed payments into your existing checkout, billing, ERP, or payout systems.
You can integrate directly or use our partner platforms to get started faster.
What kind of businesses use Azupay?
Leading businesses across retail, insurance, gaming, government, utilities, and travel use Azupay to modernise how they receive and send money.
We’re also trusted by banks, PSPs, and technology platforms that rely on our capabilities to serve their own clients.
Does Azupay help with compliance and reporting?
Yes. Azupay includes transparent audit trails, configurable approval workflows, and data exports for easy compliance with AML/CTF and financial governance requirements.
Do I still need to reconcile manually?
No. Azupay automatically reconciles transactions in real time using rich data attached to every NPP payment, reducing errors and admin costs.
Does Azupay support large or complex implementations?
Absolutely. Azupay is built for enterprise scale, supporting thousands of daily transactions with dedicated integration, onboarding, and ongoing support.
Our white-glove service ensures your solution is configured, tested, and optimised for your business case.
How does Azupay keep my business and customer data secure?
Security isn’t a feature, it’s the foundation of everything we build. Azupay is SOC 2 Type II accredited, meaning our systems and controls are independently audited each year for security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy.
Our information security program is aligned with NIST 2.0, ISO 27001, and other global frameworks, and includes:
- Continuous monitoring, penetration testing, and 24/7 threat detection.
- End-to-end encryption (AES for data at rest, TLS 1.2+ for data in transit).
- Tamper-resistant FIPS 140-2 Level 3 hardware key management.
- Multi-factor authentication, zero-trust access, and least-privilege controls.
All cloud environments we use are ISO 27001, SOC 1, and SOC 2 certified, and our code pipelines follow secure-development and supply-chain-risk best practices.
For enterprise clients, Azupay also offers white-glove onboarding, custom access controls, and the ability to request our SOC 2 Type II report during due-diligence or annual risk reviews.
When you choose Azupay, you’re choosing a provider whose security posture is independently verified and continuously improved, protecting your data, your customers, and your reputation.
How much does Azupay cost?
Azupay’s pricing is based on transaction volume and integration type, but it’s typically cheaper than cards, BNPL, or direct debit, with no scheme fees, hidden commissions, and reduced chargebacks.
Beyond transaction fees, it’s important to consider the operational costs of legacy systems, like manual reconciliation, payment failures, and lengthy settlements that tie up cash flow.
There’s also a cost to delaying innovation. As more Australians adopt PayID and PayTo, enterprises that move early are capturing faster revenue, lower overheads, and stronger customer retention.
Azupay helps you modernise payments with minimal disruption, and maximum commercial return.
